Am I the only one at my age who doesn't have a main ambition yet? Most of my friends can already see their future as doctors, engineers, accountants and lawyers. Most of them already have ambition. I don't. I don't know what I want to be.
I think about this almost every day. I ask opinions from my parents and friends a lot. Is it too early for me to think about my future? I mean, my mom always says,
Takyah fikir lagi. Belajar je rajin-rajin dulu sampai lulus SPM, lepas tu baru fikir.
Well, she has a point. Maybe I shouldn't be that worried yet. Let's just study smart and get good results first, and then think about the future ... right?
At first, I wanted to be a doctor just like my parents. Everyone (especially my aunts and cousins) always ask me whether I want to follow my parents' footsteps of not. Yes, of course, I want to but guess what? My mom won't let me. I mean, she said that there are already too many doctors in Malaysia. So many that some of them waited for so long to get a job. It's not that she don't let me be one, she was just advising. So, I decided not to be a doctor.
I also took a bunch of Online Free Career Tests here, here, here and here. You can try them; they're great and completely free. Most of my results are not related to science at all. More to business stuff. I don't know about this as I don't like these accounts and economy stuff. If you read this post of mine, I enjoy learning science. It is the stream I wanted when I was still in lower secondary form. But to be honest, I don't think I will continue with science in my future. I love learning it but maybe not for my career.
I tried to list the things that I like and interested in. You know what? I love baking, photography, and writing. I've mentioned all of these on my about me page, but here, I'll go in depth about them. So, here are the things that I might want to be in the future.
1. Photographer
This is the only thing that I'm sure of. I want to be a photographer. I need to be a photographer. This has been my dream since I was a kid. My dad's hobby is taking photos. He's not a photographer, but he has a DSLR and other few cameras. He has many sizes of lenses. He collects lots of books and magazines related to photography. He makes me want to be a photographer so bad. I also love looking and admiring amazing photos, and I've always wanted to take pictures like those. I don't know what I'll be soon, but I will make this happen. Whether as my primary or part-time job. Having a photography studio would be great! At least a mini one, with studio lighting and different backgrounds. Aahhh I want this to happen!
2. Pastry Chef or Business Woman
As I said on my about page, I want to launch my cafe. Cafes are beautiful. I love how people go there to do work, chill, date and others there, the coffee aroma you'll smell every time you enter a cafe and how quiet the place can sometimes be. I LOVE IT. I want to be a business woman with my cafe or at least a pastry chef at a cafe. I've been dreaming of having a cafe with books, like a library + cafe. Omg! Wouldn't it be cool to read novels or magazine with a cup of hot coffee? I would design the cafe as beautiful and hipster as I can. I talked about this with one of my friends (who also don't have any ambitions yet), and we planned this together! I don't know if it would happen but hey if it does, don't forget to visit my cafe okay?
3. Writer
I enjoy writing since I was little. For your information, I wrote a novel once! I was 11 that time, and I loved reading books so much. I used these brown exercise books every school had and wrote a novel about my friends and me and I finished 3 of the exercise books. I had my family, and my classmates read them, and they enjoyed it. My dad asked me to type it up, but I didn't want to. So, where do I express my love towards writing? Here. This blog. That's why I enjoy blogging since 2012. One thing that I've always dreamed of is to have my novel. I will try to write a novel (probably in Malay) and send it to a publishing company. I want to make this happen, and I want to have at least one novel written by me before I die. Insya'Allah.
Based on all my interests, these are the careers I'm interested in. I would love to have at least one of these jobs as a part-time job. Leading career? I don't know. I still can't figure out any. Recently, I've been Googling about engineers. Yes, it is a science-related career but hey, why not? Aaahhh I DON'T KNOW. For now, I just need to focus on my school studies and of course, SPM.
Speaking about SPM,
GOOD LUCK TO ALL STUDENTS BATCH '99 !!! ALL THE BEST ❤
Whatever you're doing in your life, do your best. I wish everyone a splendid luck and no matter how hard your life is going currently, do not give up and remember, Allah had planned the best for each one of us!
i was a science stream student during high school. i got 6As and 3Bs for spm and took foundation in biological/health science bcs hey, my result is not that bad to be a doctor, right? i was a week away from registering for bachelor in medical science that i already got an offer letter for and one day, i suddenly felt like it wasn't the right thing to do, like i was hit with a sudden realisation that being a doctor is not what i wanna do so i changed my mind and applied for tesl. i studied in private uni so changing course at the very last minute is not a problem. you see, you're never going to know what you want to be until at the very last minute. i wanted to be a doctor/pharmacist since i was a kid and look at me now: halfway through getting my degree in tesl bcs i love english and i know i can teach (i'm taking a gap year bcs i wanna relax at home for a year lol). so my point is, it's okay to change your mind, it's okay to not know what to be. besides you're still 16. having ambitions are not only limited to being a doctor/engineer/lawyer je, being a writer, photographer, and baker is still a career too. and what your mom said is true though. we are flooded with doctors/future doctors with no to little job opportunities. 300k spent on medical degree, only to not have jobs in the country. sheeesssh.
ReplyDeleteomg congrats with your results! yeap your story is so true. i've heard some of my cousins' experiences like yours too, where they changed their minds at the last minute. tesl sounds interesting, good luck with your studies! yesss i totally agreed, my friend's father is a successful international photographer. that keeps me inspired too. i know right, there were a few temporary teachers at my school who were supposed to be doctors, but they've been waiting for a job for too long that they have to teach at schools of a while to get some income. thank you so much for your advice, Erin! i really appreciate it :)
DeleteI'm graduating next year and I'm still clueless on what should I be in the future lol.
ReplyDeleteI love writing too and want to publish my writing somewhere in the future but as a job realistically I don't think I could make it.
btw, I would like to read your novel :)
good luck, Rasya! you'll find what you should be one day :)
Deletesame, i don't think i could make it too but i want to give it a try. i've read one or two bloggers who had their novels published!
hahahah that novel was created like 5 years ago, i'm still searching for it too. i would share it here on my blog if i found it! :)
your hobby or your passion will be one of the choices for your future :)
ReplyDeleteyeap, i'm thinking the same thing too :)
DeleteMy dream used to be a doctor, psychologist, precisely. But as I'm getting older (lol) there's more to think, and it wasn't mainly about yourself anymore ;')
ReplyDeleteAnd here I am, landed in a course that never once I thought I would pursue in (or love deadly) as me also love science a lot. life happens.
i feel you! i wanted to be a doctor too but as time flies, our minds keep changing right?
Deletewhat course are you taking? whatever it is, good luck, Faten! :)
It's okay Liyana, when I was in your age, i don't have any ambition too and clueless what I want to be. Because Erin and others already points all out, all I can say is when the time comes, you'll figure it out what you want to be and just like what your mom said "Belajar je rajin-rajin dulu sampai lulus SPM, lepas tu baru fikir." hehehe good luck in your study Liyana :)
ReplyDeleteyou're right! hehe thank you so much, claudy :)
DeleteI was a science stream student too when I was in secondary school. My ambition was always wanted to be a dentist. I knew that not everyone could be a doctor so I did not want to risk anything like some of my friends, they wanted to be a doctor but at the end, they couldn't do it. I got 5A's and 3 B's in SPM and I thought I still had a chance to be a dentist. After UPU result came out, I got an offer to continue my study at UiTM Lendu for Diploma in Business and also got an offer from Matriculation. At first I was so sad that I couldn't make it to foundation in science. Tbh, I don't want to study in matriks (I mean, siapa je nak kan?). but then that was the only option I got so I just proceeded with matriculation.
ReplyDeleteI was a module 1 student. So my schedule was hella tiring. The only thing about me that I finally realised that I couldn't study in rushing. I couldn't study with stress overloaded. My result in matriks was okay, but still I need to get a god damn 4.0 to get into dentistry course but I didn't get one. My UPU result came out and I got an offer to pursue my degree in Civil Engineering. My dad said that he did not want to see me as an engineer and he wanted to see me with other field in the future. Same goes to all my family members and cousins. At that time, I lost hope. My dream was to be a dentist and I couldn't make it. I studied so hard to be a dentist but hey, fate brought me here. Now I study in Bachelor in Project Management in UMP. I was lucky because I still had a chance to continue here since I declined my letter to UTHM for civil eng. I'm happy at the same time too because Project Management is related to business and my option if I couldn't be a dentist was I wanted to be an Accountant or Business Woman. Maybe Allah shows that this is my rezeki and maybe I will do better in this field.
What I'm trying to say is that you don't have to worry about your future and don't think too much about it. Just go with the flow. I'm not saying that you should not think of your ambition at all but you need to list down what you target you want to be. Then focus on the subjects that matter. What subject you should take to be as (...). You need to have a backup plan and that's it. Don't stress out. Rezeki ada dimana mana je. Yang penting study elok2 and get good results :)
i wanted to be a dentist too once. congrats with your SPM results! matriculation sounds hard but most of my teachers recommended to us to go with it. yeap, study in rushing is bad :( i used to study at the very last minute so i was really rushing and it made me so stressed and lack of sleep. awww it's okay, glad that you're happy with your course now. surely Allah has much better plans for everyone! insya'Allah :)
Deleteyou're right, i shouldn't be worrying. my friends always talk about their ambitions which lead me to thinking about what's mine. but yeap, i've listed what i want and i really need to focus on what's happening now first. thank you so much for your advice, Dayana! your story is really inspiring. good luck with your studies :)
I was a science stream student. My dream, I would say i want to be an accountant. Then i end up as a TESL student for my foundation/ASASI. But maybe i dont have any luck with the course that i pursue. Then, i end up with the course that i always wanted. I get to pursue my studies in accounting and now there are two years left before i graduate. So sometimes things happen beyond our control. My mom actually against my choice of becoming accountant as it is a hard course but eventually gives in. However your choice of careers as part time job is awesome and that are the careers that is fun and yet challenging. As for the main job, soon you will discover what is the job that you want. Just keep on getting information on any types of careers that associated with science as there are a lot of it that we never knew before. Keep chillin and good luck with your studies :)
ReplyDeletei see. you're lucky then to got to follow your dreams! good luck with your studies! yeap, whatever happens, happens. thank you! yesss i really wish to have one of these careers as my job, either part time or full time. they are fun and challenging but i really want to give them a try! insya'Allah. i will, i've been searching a lot about these science stuffs lately hahahah. thank you, Cikk Mira :)
Deletehey Liyana, we have the same name :p
ReplyDeletei tried one of the quiz and it did not match my job right now. Nowadays not everyone can have their dream job you know?
I only know i like to be an engineer during matrics. I want to be a chemical eng at first, but my father advise civil, so i just took his advise. I'm a project engineer now.
One of your quiz above result said that i should be a;
small business owner, event planner, chef of your own restaurant, CEO or president.
hehe..see?
But I like business, so i have part time business.
I like writing, so i have ab blog. Just dont have the time now :(
all the best to u!
heyyy, Liyana! hahahahah yeah we have the same name ayyyy :)
Deleteyeah i know. things keep on changing in life, only Allah knows what's going to happen next. that sounds interesting! i see, mine was also saying i should have a business. that's good to have a part time business, i love writing too! you'll find your time soon. thank you, Liyana :)
Assallammuallaikum..salam ukhuwah dari Indonesia.
ReplyDeletewaalaikumussalam! :)
DeleteI think what ur mom told u was right . It is not wrong to think what u going to be in the future but for these 2 years of study just focus and aim straight A's so after u get a good result , i think u'll get a huge amount of time to think of what course u want to follow. Believe yourself and study smart;)
ReplyDeletei know right. yesss i should focus on my studies now, i'll think about my future after this whole school life is over. insya'Allah! i will, thank you Anis :)
DeleteEH awakk, serius sama dgn saya, nak jadi photographer + bukak cafe sendiri + penulis buku HEHE
ReplyDeleteBTW, moga tercapai hasrat awak =)
sama laaa! hahahah thank you, insya'Allah aminnn :)
DeleteYou got big dreams! And we're just the same. My mom always says the same thing when I asked her about my ambition. "Study baik-baik. Tengok result then pilih ikut result tu." And I was like, nahh. What should I do? People kept saying we should study based on what we wanna be. But I don't even know what to be. What I wanna be? Where should I go? I still can't say anything about it T_T
ReplyDeletethanks! kannn my mom pun selalu cakap macam tu. and yesss me too, as you can see based on my post, the careers i mentioned has nothing to do with the stream i'm in currently. i guess we should just go with the flow and get good results. insya'Allah Allah had planned the best for us :)
good luck sis :D dont think too much, just study smart.
ReplyDeletebtw i also want to be a business woman lol
https://mellyacrayola.blogspot.my/
thank you! i won't and i will study smart insya'Allah :)
Deletesame hahahah
You'll found it someday. U tenang ajerr. :D
ReplyDeleteEven me, was in science stream but now a business girl. I do not know accounts or whatsoeva. But hey, one day you'll realize the world actually have many opportunity left open for those who seek. Just maybe seek it at the right place with the right intention. Good luck btw. :D
insya'Allah, i will! :)
Deletethat's great! that's true, there are lots of amazing opportunities out there and we just have to find one. thank you, Eyqa :)

Deletenothing much i can comment on this. since i was the type that goes with the flow. applied to uni for the sake of getting a degree, getting a job to get the money , etc. haha. but yeah, when u turn your passion into your career, its the most beautiful thing ever. :)
ReplyDeletehahahah, i really should just go with the flow too. i know right, that's what i want tbh! but i don't know what i'm most passionate about :(
